How do you change your host name after your installation is done? (network settings)
Also, what are valid parameters for host name? I made afresh installation of woody in a 386 I got in an auction, and every time gdm starts it complains about the host name. I also noticed that email sent from console using simple mail commands doesn't go anywhere, it just vanishes without trace. This does not happen in another woody box I have.
Thanks to all in advance.

In Debian you usually have the choice of manually editing a config file or using the "dpkg-reconfigure" utility on installed packages. In this case the proper utility is called "etherconf", and I would advise installing it if you don't have it. It makes setting up your network a bit more intuitive, IMHO. It will allow you to set your hostname and domain name as well as configure your ethernet cards. If you just want to manually change the hostname then you can edit the /etc/hostname file.

If you got the box at an auction, there are some other places that might need "personality" changes to fit your situation. This is probably the reason your mail commands are disappearing. You should probably re-configure your MTA (i.e. eximconfig if using EXIM) to set the default for system mail messages to you rather than its former owner. I would also check out the /etc/hosts, host.allow, and hosts.deny files. There may be others that need chaning too, but these are the ones that come to mind right now.
