Were you non-root? If not, are you a member of group cdrom? Was the cd
in the drive a data cd? Is /dev/cdrom mentioned in /etc/fstab? Does
/dev/cdrom exist?

As root, with a data cd in the drive, try running:

  mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdg /cdrom
