I am in no way trying to flame, and I am saying in the most sincere and pleasant manner possible, that if having a nice pretty boot logo and avoiding seeing startup messages is more important to you than a fast, clean install ("the bad outweighs the good"), then Debian is just not for you. I wish you happiness with whichever distribution you decide to use.
BTW, I am not a "GUI luddite", either, I'm firmly in the camp that believes you _can_ have it all: both a stable, solid base _and_ pretty packaging. I just agree with Debian's approach, that having the stable, solid base is the most critical thing, and the pretty packaging is secondary. It's not for everyone, and we all recognize that.
