In certain areas of this planet, people have developed *impressions* of the meanings of various political philosophies without having the opportunity to know the actual details and philosophies of each - be that Socialist, Communist, Liberal, Libertarian, Conservative, Capitalist, Laisse-Faire or whichever. Socialism and Communism have been particularly demonised in North America, while for long stretches the Eastern Bloc did the same to Capitalism, leading to some erroneous beliefs about what each entails and advocates. The fact is that most all philosophies pursue positive values, but have negative side effects. Often, the more disruption to the status quo and developed human behaviour involved, the greater the negative effects. On that point, this is not the Debian-Philosophies list. -- Mark L.
