I have had ongoing problems with this very issue. You can try gnome-calendar, as it uses vCal formats -- but I've had problems with its alarms, and it isn't easy to have multiple calendars. Since you're sinking with your handheld, I'd highly suggest jpilot -- it works almost exactly like the Palm Desktop for Windows, but better.
