So, you should do this: 1) Add these lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free 2) Read Chapter 3 of the APT Howto: http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ Esp. section 3.7, if you want to install XFree86 4.2.1 but don't want all of your system to be unstable.
