Bandwidth management & traffic shaping on your home network????
Unless you're learning how to do it so you can then do it at work,
seems like a huge overkill.

Not much.  A Cyrix M2-233, 32MB RAM and a 1GB HD are way overkill.

GUIs, bloated apps and "decompression apps" (like MP3 players) suck
so much juice that people forget (and young people have never known)
how fast that even 10yo CPUs (i.e., Jamin's 486SX25) are.

For a home LAN, I wouldn't be surprised if a 386DX40 with adequate
RAM would be adequate.
