Bob, Thank you for this response. I am still very new at Linux and have hesitated doing a kernel rebuild, but that is on the list...I just want to get a way to do a backup so that when something goes wrong I won't have to start from scratch ... I'm on about the 15th install and it's getting tiresome!
I am using Synaptic as my package management tool, and I think I can handle a kernel update, but the question is, has been, I am using ext3 as my filesystem, do the other kernels besides "bf" support this file system type? IIRC, the "bf" kernels do not include the modules you're missing. I'm using kernel-image-2.4.18-k7 (from woody) which does include them. It was fairly painless for me to install the new kernel using apt-get.
