I have a quite similar message here when starting it with --debug, but its starts fine... (last line I get is "debug: is spam? score=-3.8 required=5") The only real difference in my setup here is that I pass it "--user" and "--group" arguments...
It might be a perl version problem... I run spamassassin on a woody box here.
