There must be other errors before that - but oracle database creation
being what it is, I suspect they have scrolled several miles off the
screen...

It sounds like you database instance didn't make it up at all. To get
the error message again, try (as oracle):

    $ sqlplus /nolog
    ...
    SQL> connect internal;
    Connected to an idle instance
    SQL> startup

and I would expect an error of some sort.  Hopefully the resulting error
message will guide you in the right direction.
