OK, I did that and I was able to do some RP-ing while at the same time playing sample sounds from the Gnome sounds menu (although I usually have these turned off). However, when I looked there it was already selecting ESD--but I had also never run realplayer standalone before and had to set it up, so maybe it discovered this during the setup and the plugin didn't have it before.
But, I guess it worked--we'll see the next time I have an important thing to listen to on the Web :).
