OK-did change the permissions for /dev/sg0 /dev/sg1 /dev/sda /dev/sda1
and unfortunately didn't get anything out of that.
The strange thing is that ripperx doesn't do anything at all but to complain about 
cdrom not being accessible but grip reads the cd - tracks and other data shows but 
wouldn't rip anything.
Kind of funny though - got most of the music I want and already got on cd from file 
sharing.When I want to rip my own cd's for the same I run into permission trouble.
