As per upstream bug report:

Hi! While packaging it for Debian I discovered that /usr/bin/qt5ct will show an 
error and exit if QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME is not set. This is actually 
counterintuitive, as the app itself does not seems to need that environment 
variable to be set to work.

Ideally the application should start and present a message stating that changes 
will not be seen unless qt apps are run with that env variable set, but 
continue to work non the less. Better yet if that warning is present at the 
bottom or the top of the window (ie, with or without a warning at the 
beginning).
