I believe that doing something like this will change the preferences: https://standards.freedesktop.org/mime-apps-spec/mime-apps-spec-1.0.html % echo -e "[Default Applications]\napplication/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document=libreoffice-writer.desktop" |sudo tee /usr/share/applications/mimeapps.list [Default Applications] application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document=libreoffice-writer.desktop But this clearly requires collaboration between a large set of applications to produce a reasonable set of defaults. Perhaps building a list of default applications by following the KDE InitialPreference field or something similar would be good enough and baking that into desktop-file-install or similar? This might need to be raised more broadly on debian-devel.
