After seeing the sddm blank screen switch to a tty (ctrl-alt-f2) and as root, or as the sddm user run:
XAUTHORITY=/var/run/sddm/* DISPLAY=:0 xrandrif the XAUTHORITY is not expanded as is, you might need to check the output of ps ax | grep Xorg
the argument of the -auth parameter is what you want to set as the value of XAUTHORITY.
