Hi again,
I now copy the halfwidth part of the FixedMisc font as FixedMiscHW.
When I select that font in Kate, it works… funnily enough, fullwidth
glyphs are also drawn, I have no idea from what fonts though (there
are several; some fit into the height, some extend the lines). This
all smells quite suboptimal to me and very “automagically”.

(gnutls can also be used, but if you are compiling lynx for your own use,
