It seems that there is a conflict between plymouth and sddm
during initial startup while plymouth is still showing graphics.

Please take a look at attached Xorg log files (timestamps stripped).

It seems that sddm has to wait until plymouth quits.
E.g. plymouth --wait

N.B. kdm didn't exhibit this behavior.
