Hi Gary! First of all, let me tell you I'm by no means a KMail expert. So most of I could suggest/ask here comes from asking other people. I would like to know where was your data stored. Was it in your hard drive or in a Kolab server? Just for the record, when I did the migration some months ago I didn't had that problem, so it might be a special setup here.
