Wondering if tweaking some specific X parameter could somehow force 'refreshing' (if, as it seems, the greeter is actually there but invisible). Anyway, following the suggestion in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1665405 I uncommented TerminateServer=true in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc and now the greeter shows up nicely after logut (maybe also generically useful (in a preventive way) in order to get a 'cleaner' restart?).
