I think compiling with -O1 will be sufficient to fix the problems in qt4-x11 on Alpha. (Using -O1 fixed a similar problem in iceweasel.) This is a temporary fix for a binutils bug with relocations in very large C++ shareable libraries that has plagued us for some time, but which we do hope to get fixed. (I am fighting other fires at the moment so the binutils bug will have to burn for a bit longer.)
