Two things - my kmail version is 4.4.7 but my KDE version is 4.4.5, which is
where my confusion was about what I was running. The second is that it was my
fault it was not fixed. Somehow the ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail/autosave/cur
directory had been deleted, but me I am sure, and when I restored it, it
worked fine! I discovered this by comparing the directory tree of a newly
created user to my directory tree.

I am sorry for all of the grief I have caused with complaining about this!
