I killed all running kdeinit-related processes, re-started kate, and now the error is gone.
How to restart kdeinit: 0) Exit kate. 1) Check for kde-related processes. You should find kdeinit or kdeinit4, klauch[4], kded[4]. 2) Kill these processes. pkill kdeinit pkill kded should be sufficient. 3) Launch kate. Note that kdeinit[4] will restart automatically.
