Package: kdepim-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.9-2
Severity: normal
I use kmail with spamassassin to get and read my e-mail. I receive tons of spam
since my address is public (you can find it at a lot of
places, not the least Debian BTS) but I receive legitimate messages at the same
address. It is an IMAP account.
Kmail regularly checks for new e-mail. It is normal to download complete
messages to check them through spamassassin. But the problem is that
kmail, through kio-imap, download every message every time. So all messages are
completely downloaded, checked and then reuploaded all times,
thus wasting a lot of bandwidth and (even worst) time.
Sometimes, so much time than the next regular check starts just after finishing
uploading messages from the previous.
Is not possible to make kio-imap to cache which messages have been spamassassin
checked?
Problem is reproducible:
1 take an IMAP account on some server
2 configure kmail to check that account regularly, with a relatively short
period
3 configure kmail to check all incoming messages through spamassasin (standard
local spamassassin)
4 publish your e-mail address
This problem causes another, harder one. Sometimes, if you have a small failure
in your internet connexion, or just a burst of load, kmail
starts a new check without finishing the previous one, and shows you the same
message several times on screen. It has happened a lot of
times, and I've checked into the server real directories and there are no such
messages there. So there is some sort of caching, but it does
not work well. If you click one of the repeated messages, kmail downloads it
and shows it to you. If you click the other, kmail shows you an
empty message. Refreshing does not help. Trying to move the "empty" message to
another folder of the same IMAP account causes kmail to crash.
If you restart kmail almost immediately, since kio-imap4 is still alive, the
problem persists and you still see duplicated messages (I've
seen once octuplicated messages, and several times triplicated and
quadruplicated ones).
To put in one sentence: kmail+spamassassin on IMAP sucks (not intended to be
offensive, just my feeling). And I need kmail and spamassasin
because my local folders are maildir and i receive tons (not uncommon 200/day)
spam messages.
