I can replicate this bug reliably on one machine. I have another machine running with up-to-date sid that this problem is not present on. The difference between the machines is that the one without the problem has an Nvidia graphics chip (with proprietary driver) and the one with the problem has an Intel graphics chip. Furthermore, this problem first appeared when xserver- xorg-video-intel was updated to 2:2.8.0.
