I asked on #debian-kde, and <URL:http://paste.debian.net/12462/> was mentioned, stopping usplash before starting kdm. It might be a better idea to use the splash screen api provided by initscripts, ie splash_stop() from /lib/init/splash-functions-base. Something like this added just before starting kdm should work: . /lib/init/splash-functions-base splash_stop Any hope of having this fixed very soon, and in time for Lenny? This issue is very important for Debian Edu. We had to drop usplash as a quickfix to get the system working at all.
