I hope this is the right spot to post this. Whatever update to arts was placed in the testing-proposed-updates repository suggested by the last poster works perfectly to solve the problem.
Arch: i686, `uname-r` = 2.6.24-1-686 Lenny, with all updates as of April 2, 22:42PST including those from the testing-proposed-updates repository.
