See the desktop-profiles package which has the infrastructure bit for managing KDEDIRS (and several similar variables like XDG_CONFIG_DIRS, ...) In order to add /usr/local to KDEDIRS for all users on your machine, just install desktop-profiles and add the attached metadata file to /etc/destktop-profiles. As to wether setting KDEDIRS will cause problems or not, that will depend very much depend on what's in the directories added to KDEDIRS, most of the time it won't cause problems. -- Cheers, cobaco (aka Bart Cornelis)
