Thanks very much for this workaround. Because of this issue, I have had to use fvwm for the last several days, and it basically sucks compared to KDE. :-)
I suspect there are a lot of frustrated startx KDE Debian testing users out there at this moment with hung startkde sessions who are not aware of the workaround, but relief is in sight for them. http://bjorn.haxx.se/debian/testing.pl?package=ksmserver says the new ksmserver that apparently fixes the issue should get into lenny within 5 days with some luck. My basic problem is I bought new hardware (ASUS P5K-V MB with Intel g33 chipset) to reduce the noise in the office and also reduce the power bills. However, that hardware is too close for Linux comfort to the cutting edge so I am forced to use Debian testing (and sometimes even Debian unstable) when I would much prefer Debian stable. But I went with the new hardware with my eyes wide open to the Linux consequences, and I am glad that so far I am finding workarounds in Debian testing/unstable for all problems. Also, I am trying to fulfill my side of the Debian bargain by initiating bug reports for the new hardware when that is appropriate. This bug is not such an occasion (it's just a general result of using Debian testing) but I am so glad to see this workaround, that I felt moved to make some general remarks. Also, my thanks to all the Debian volunteers that make this such a good community. Alan __________________________ Alan W.
