After several combinations of upgrades and downgrades, I've found that the 3.5.5-1 versions of KDE packages work alright, but that kwin 4:3.5.5-1 causes flickering / flashing of windows when a window is in focus. Holding kwin at 4:3.5.4-2+b1 (and hence also kdebase) and upgrading other Debian KDE packages to 3.5.5-1 seem to work alright. Hope that this saves someone else a few hours.
