Package: kate
Version: 4:3.4.2-4
Severity: important
When a file that is "in Kate" is reloaded, for example
/var/log/syslog (that you can monitor in Kate), the
cursor should be repositioned, to the text (line/char)
position, and to the position within the window before
reload.
In other words, the text should be scrolled to show the
same lines, that is, the same line numbers (since the
entire text may be replaced), and that the cursor should
return to the same position as before.
In case the entire text is replaced at reload, this
behaviour may (though not necessarily) be of less
importance, but when the file is extended only (like when
monitoring syslog) it is very helpful.
Such a behaviour is still more helpful when the monitored
file is a large output file that is regenerated in a static
pattern when some application is repeatedly run. Each new
run will then immediately be visible at the interesting
position in the file, to which the editor window will
return.
Of course the return-to-position is impossible if the
replaced file does not contain enough number of lines or
characters within the return-to-line. The way to take care
of that is hopefully self-evident.
Important, will save many working-hours!
