The behaviour has changed in KDE 3.5, and is much more annoying. KDE logout + login restores the right virtual desktop even if I have Kate running. However, it seems that the Kate window is restored on the wrong virtual desktop. It seems that Kate window is restored on whichever virtual desktop happened to be active at logout; not on the virtual desktop where Kate was running at logout.
