Hello, I just noticed this bug is still open; while the issue still exists, I'll definitely not find any time to implement the proposed script.
While I agree with all your reasoning and ideas (kconf_update should be used, etc. etc.) I simply don't have time to start learning the kconf_update framework :-( Feel free to tag this one WONTFIX or [help] so some aspiring kconf_update hacker can whip up a correct patch.
