The original report was about a problem with the IMAP account. I never had a problem with this kind of account, but I suppose is related to the synchronous-filtering problem. Getting a faster client / server, bigger bandwith, and having patience while the GUI seems frozen, helps. My recommendation: Switch to disconnected IMAP, because is the recommended kind of account for IMAP, and the filtering works better.
