I have since discovered that my problem is the same bug as #261753. Under that bug report, a work-around is given. This works OK also for me (except that I put the .desktop file in the .hidden sub-directory of applnk, since that's where KDE was itself putting the .desktop files.)
So, I have a work around, and I'm happy, but there's still an underlying problem. cheers, Simon
