It will cause the X server to use hundreds of megs of RAM and hang the machine. I watched an episode of my favourite Sci-Fi show while waiting for my machine to respond to any X event (even mouse movement), and then had to ssh in from another machine to kill Konqueror. I tried viewing it with kview and it took 800M of memory before I killed it, I tried viewing it with "xv" and after only 300M of memory use it viewed the picture, but it didn't view it properly, it scaled it to fit the screen (and lost most of the content). Mozilla was the only program that could properly display it. It made the X server take 200M of memory, but the X server did not cause the machine to thrash or lock up (unlike Konqueror). PS You can demonstrate the problem on a machine with anything from 64M to 512M of RAM. But to show Mozilla being significantly better you need to have about 384M of RAM (which I have in my test machine). I expect that with a GIG of RAM I might have this working properly with kview and konqueror. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux lyta 2.4.22-pcmcia #1 Sun Sep 7 21:56:57 EST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages konqueror depends on: ii kate 4:3.1.3-1 KDE Advanced Text Editor ii kcontrol 4:3.1.3-1 KDE Control Center ii kdelibs4 4:3.1.3-1 KDE core libraries ii kfind 4:3.1.3-1 KDE File Find Utility ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.16-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libc6 2.3.2-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.6.10-1 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.3.2-0pre3 GCC support library ii libjpeg62 6b-8 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libkonq4 4:3.1.3-1 Core libraries for KDE's file mana ii libpcre3 4.3-3 Philip Hazel's Perl 5 Compatible R ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt 3:3.2.1-4 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.2-0pre3 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxrender1 0.8.2-1 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs 4.2.1-11 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.1.4-14 compression library - runtime -- debconf information: * konqueror/crypto: --------------------------------------- Received: (at 210986-close) by bugs.debian.org; 28 Apr 2004 23:21:11 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Wed Apr 28 16:21:11 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from dsl-61-95-69-6.request.com.au (smtp.sws.net.au) [61.95.69.6] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1BIyMY-0004CE-00; Wed, 28 Apr 2004 16:21:11 -0700 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smtp.sws.net.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id 7B12561C96; Thu, 29 Apr 2004 09:21:08 +1000 (EST) Received: from smtp.sws.net.au ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (smtp [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id 15481-10; Thu, 29 Apr 2004 09:21:07 +1000 (EST) Received: from lyta.coker.com.au (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smtp.sws.net.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id 730A061C5B; Thu, 29 Apr 2004 09:21:07 +1000 (EST) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by lyta.coker.com.au (Postfix) with ESMTP id 984B6B586F; Thu, 29 Apr 2004 09:21:09 +1000 (EST) From: Russell Coker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Riku Voipio <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Bug#210986: konqueror and large jpegs - fixed by upstream? Can you verify it? I can't find the image > in you bugreport [1], nut other sig2dot graphs render fine. If both upstream and your testing show that the bug appears to be fixed then the best thing to do is to close it (I'll do so). If I experience future problems about image size I will file a new bug report.
