(As well as xdm -- no other window managers installed) After fiddling for a while i found out, that /etc/X11/default-display-manager contains the following line: 10 kdm/daemon_name doesn't exist which seems to be an error message of db_get or so. If found the following line in "/var/lib/dpkg/info/xdm.postinst" safe_debconf db_get "$DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER"/daemon_name So this might be a problem of xdm after all! I can reproduce the whole thing by starting "dpkg-reconfigure xdm" and switching to "kdm" there. Switching back and forth between xdm and kdm with "dpkg-reconfigure kdm" fixes the problem. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux complexity 2.4.18-1-k7 #3 Sat Nov 29 10:23:13 EST 2003 i686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages kdm depends on: ii debconf 1.3.20 Debian configuration management sy ii kdelibs4 4:3.1.4-3 KDE core libraries ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.16-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libfam0c102 2.6.10-6 client library to control the FAM ii libgcc1 1:3.3.2-4 GCC support library ii libpam0g 0.76-14 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt 3:3.2.1-6 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.2-4 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxrender1 0.8.3-4 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xbase-clients 4.2.1-12.1 miscellaneous X clients ii xlibs 4.2.1-12.1 X Window System client libraries ii zlib1g 1:1.1.4-16 compression library - runtime -- debconf information: * kdm/default_servers_nolisten_tcp: * kdm/default_servers_100dpi: * kdm/default_nolisten_udp: * shared/default-x-display-manager: kdm --------------------------------------- Received: (at 231901-done) by bugs.debian.org; 9 Feb 2004 16:35:57 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Feb 09 08:35:57 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from thumbler.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be [134.58.240.45] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1AqEO5-0000uk-00; Mon, 09 Feb 2004 08:35:57 -0800 Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by thumbler.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be (Postfix) with ESMTP id BF62C137B66; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 17:35:25 +0100 (CET) Received: from lepidus.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be (lepidus.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be [134.58.240.72]) by thumbler.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be (Postfix) with ESMTP id 53814137900; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 17:35:25 +0100 (CET) Received: from appel (domi.kotnet.org [10.0.57.168]) by lepidus.kulnet.kuleuven.ac.be (Postfix) with ESMTP id 33A1E380153; Mon, 9 Feb 2004 17:35:25 +0100 (CET) Received: from domi by appel with local (Exim 3.36 #1 (Debian)) id 1AqEOl-0007qR-00; Mon, 09 Feb 2004 17:36:39 +0100 To: Mathias de Riese <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#231901: kdm: /etc/X11/default-display-manager filled wrongly References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: Dominique Devriese <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, 09 Feb 2004 17:36:39 +0100 In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Mathias de Riese's message of "Mon, 09 Feb 2004 15:42:30 +0100") Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> User-Agent: Gnus/5.1002 (Gnus v5.10.2) XEmacs/21.4 (Reasonable Discussion, linux) MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sender: Dominique Devriese <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> X-Virus-Scanned: by KULeuven Antivirus Cluster Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_02_01 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-3.0 required=4.0 tests=HAS_BUG_NUMBER autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2004_02_01 X-Spam-Level: Mathias de Riese writes: > Package: kdm Version: 4:3.1.3-1 Severity: important > after several "apt-get upgrade" (testing) kdm didnt start and > executing "/etc/init.d/kdm start" results in "Not starting K Desktop > Manager (kdm); it is not the default display manager."
