You can re-enable the use of the .desktop files in /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions by editing /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. Simply add /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions to the SessionsDirs list. FYI, some work has been done to clean up the /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions directory in the upcoming KDE 3.4 packages, and there this functionality has been restored to the default configuration.
