The first problem I had was a permission problem. I'm part of group dip and kppp and pppd have the following permissions: ls -l /usr/bin/kppp -rwxr-sr-- 1 root dip 480696 2003-05-26 07:26 /usr/bin/kppp ls -l /usr/sbin/pppd -rwsr-xr-- 1 root dip 234504 2002-11-24 12:58 /usr/sbin/pppd which is correct. Unfortunately, kppp was unable to talk to the modem (ttyS0, external modem), probably because of permissions: delphine:/etc/devfs# ls -l /dev/ttyS0 lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 5 2003-07-29 10:21 /dev/ttyS0 -> tts/0 delphine:/etc/devfs# ls -l /dev/tts/0 crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 4, 64 2003-07-29 12:44 /dev/tts/0 As you see here, /dev/tts/0 is part of dialout. Not dip. So I need to either add me to the dialout group, or either change the group of /dev/tts/* in /etc/devfs/perms and reload devfsd. After that kppp was able to talk with the modem and dial normally. The underlying question is why two groups (dip and dialout) for modem usability ? Another question is that if kppp has the suid bit set, it should be able to become root and open the /dev/ttyS0 normally. Strange. The second problem is when it start pppd. Immediately after starting it, the pppd daemon exits with status 2: extracted from 'man pppd' 2 An error was detected in processing the options given, such as two mutually exclusive options being used. So it seems that kppp is starting pppd with a set of option that is incorrect. What seems amazing for me (I'm a long user of kppp) is the 'version of pppd' field in the configuration box: it is set to "unknown". The last time I could use kppp it was set to 2.4.0 or something like this. This field is not writable by the user, as I think it is compile-time option. The other hypothesis would be that kppp could not even start pppd and displays error 2; meaning 'No such file or directory'. There is no trace of pppd start in /var/log/messages. It seems kppp is mostly unusable now. Fortunately wvdial works perfectly, meaning that my machine is not broken for other reasons. Thanks a lot for your help.
