Two things you need to know:
1) The grub menu, that you see when the installer CD first boots up, offers
"expert" mode. If you're not familiar with it, this makes the install process
more granular, so you have more control over the details and timing. In order
to apply Adrian's workaround, you need to use expert mode. It's not completely
obvious, but you should be able to figure it out -- usually the default answer
is the best, but keep your eyes open and try to understand each step.
2) Just before the reboot (at the stage you are arguing should be more explicit
about rebooting) *before* you answer "continue" you need to hit <alt>-F2 to get
yourself a shell running in the installer environment. At that point, you can
execute the steps of Adrian's workaround. When you are finished with that, you
can switch back to the installer menu by hitting <alt>-F1 . Then answer
"continue" and it will reboot -- hopefully into the system you just installed.
