I found the upstream bug in Xorg: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10525
At the end is a link to a patch and a report that the issue is resolved in Debian/unstable (SPARC)... but the bug is still open and still happens on my system. The backtraces posted on the link match the backtraces that I was able to get.
