Does the document contain URLs with non-ASCII characters? Then it's the
bug which was fixed in -7 but missed etch. But it most probably will be
fixed in the first etch update

I don't think so. And How exactly did the spellcheck not work? What
changed on your system? Is your text formatted correctly?

No idea. Spellcheck *does* work in all OOo versions.
