this problem apears with cupsys 1.1.22-8 on my system too. downgrading
to 1.1.20final+rc1-10 fixes it.
since 1.1.22-8 is now in testing i think the serverity of this bug
should be important (if it is a openoffice.org bug)
1.1.20final+rc1-10 is still available here:
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2004/10/22/debian/pool/main/c/cupsys/
I can second your experience, I was not able to print from my HP
OfficeJet G 55 since ages, downgrading you've described solved the
situation.
I use unstable/experimental, last cupsys* debs are version 1.1.23-1 and
openoffice* debs are version 1.1.3-4, but printing from Openoffice was
somehow prohibited until I downgraded packages. Before I downgraded
cupsys, I was not able see my printer from Printer Administration menu
[there was "Default printer" only]
Noticeable is that I use unstable on AMD64, on that machine cupsys* debs
are version 1.1.23-1 and openoffice* deb are 1.1.2-2.0.1 and I can see
my printer.
I hope my information will help to solve the problem
Regards
Vlada
