It is a well known bug on the 1.1.2 series. You can either downgrade to 1.1.1, move up to 1.1.3 from unstable (still has some minor issues, but the bug is gone), or open your document using 1.1.1 from Debian or 1.1.3 from OpenOffice.org (not the debian package), save your documents as MS-Word 95 (this action removes whatever it is that crashes OpenOffice), and save it back to your preferred format (.sxw or .doc 97/2000/XP). The document is now fixed and your embedded images will be screwed up, but hey, at least you could open the document.
