This also happens to me, even with Nimbus Sans L used as main GUI font. I had the same problem with the previsous version (1.1.2), but I succeeded to "solve" it forcing OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome in openoffice.org.conf, even though using kde.
This tip does not work with newer version. I can run further tests if needed, but do not know what to look for. cheers, Julien V.
