Well, the most recent version of openoffice broke on my desktop. It had all the text in the UI replaced by boxes (see bug 269152). I therefore used the directions in http://lists.debian.org/debian-openoffice/2004/09/msg00100.html to set the font of the UI, which also fixed this bug. So perhaps the problem here is some sort of font substitution problem? I don't know if this is related to any of these problems, but on my notebook I followed the above directions to change the UI font, but the change didn't take effect until I rebooted the system. ???
