Thomas, I would like to do this with minimal deviation from the standard code and packaging.
We have been shipping the v8 version already but build with v8+ because of that unused asm code. So we should ifdef out the v9 code and build with v8 like _every_ other library is built. I will try and build one next weekend. For linux sparc only, the v8+/v9 code for linux sparc could be in a separate tiny library which is not linked at runtime unless it is actually called.
