You must have your environment configured properly with an 8 bit
locale. LANG=3DC is 7 bit and does not allow the input of accents using
standard X input routines, which openoffice uses.

Comments from bei:
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

If you have problems with accents in OpenOffice.org on linux do the followi=
ng:=20

Make sure to use a locale that's supported by your=20
system AND your version of XFree86 AND that does support accent characters.=
=20

To find a suitable locale compare the output of 'locale -a' with the=20
contents of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias=20

If 'locale -a' does not show you a suitable locale install more locales for=
=20
your system.=20

If 'locale -a' just gives you "c and posix" and you are using a debian=20
distribution you are most likely victim of a debian bug that the locale=20
generation does not work the first time.=20

To fix that execute the following command as root:=20

dpkg-reconfigure locales=20

You just need to reconfigure the locale packages because locales are alread=
y=20
installed, it=B4s just that the final configuration failed the first time.=20

After you selected a suitable locale, eg. "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" set the LANG=20
environment variable to that value.=20

For example in csh you can do that by the command=20

setenv LANG [EMAIL PROTECTED]

in bash you can do that by the command=20

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ; export LANG=20

You can either do that globally before starting X11 or you can add the bash=
=20
line above to the soffice shell script in the program directory of your=20
OpenOffice.org installation to set this locale for OpenOffice.org only.=20

If you now still have problems with accented chars that could be related=20
to an OpenOffice.org issue that has already been fixed about how fonts are=20
substituted by OOo when they do not contain accent chars.

In this case you should upgrade to OpenOffice.org version 1.1 or later and=20
install all the X11 fonts your linux distribution offers.
