This problem is similiar to one i reported during 1.1.0-2 (can't find
the report, though). It was gone in 1.1.0-3. Can't say for steps between
1.1.0-3 and the recent release, because i just updated.
I have the same problem again and the same symptoms like the original
poster. I just want to add that no font BUT Bitstream Vera Sans and Vera
Mono display italics. Again, Bitstream Vera Sans and Vera Mono do
display italics.
Currently i help myself by typing in Bitstream Vera Sans and switch the
documents to a serif font just for printing. This is annoying but works.
About my system:
A recent Debian SID.
Kernel 2.6.3 on i386.
Gnome 2.4.
gsfonts, xfonts and Bitstream fonts
