I'm not able to reproduce this on my machine given your instructions; this could be because I am not using ppc. Please can you upgrade your installed packages to 1.1.0-2, and run openoffice from the command line. You should find that you get a stack trace when openoffice crashes - please post the complete output to this bug log.
