Apologies if this was reported by everybody else. I found that the latest release of openoffice.org wouldn't install (or, once installed, run) with the version of debianutils-1.15 I had, because it used a mktemp feature not supported in that version. It should either supply a name template argument, or just pre-depend on version 2.something, e.g. the latest, 2.5.5.
